Whole Ranch Chicken

Hello fellow foodies,

So I had planned to cut up one of our meat chickens but it was a lot to conquer…they were each about 10lbs so we had one with friends and just cut the other in two and froze them.

I decided to cook one of the halves last night.

Usual recipe

  • 3-4lb whole chicken
  • 1 white onion
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 ranch packet
  • 1 cup chicken broth

This Reciepe:

  • 5lb half chicken
  • 1 red onion
  • 3 halo oranges
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 packet of ranch

Basically with ranch, some type of citrus, onion and broth you’ll get good flavoring.

First poor the broth in the crockpot. If you have a small chicken you can stuff the citrus in the cavity. Ours was in half so I just made a rack of citrus for it to sit on. Rub the ranch seasoning all over the chicken. Layer the onions around the chicken. Close the lid and let cook on low.

I always prefer to cook it on low for 6-8hrs. Ours is usually ready in 5.5hrs. It was a little pink still when I checked it before the 5hr mark.

My son was super anxious to eat this chicken all day so sorry for the lack of pictures! Kid approved 😉

Serve it with your favorite roasted veggies or fruit and salad.

Happy eating,
